What is IAS?

The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is one of the most prestigious civil services in India. Recruitment to the IAS and other top services like IPS and IFS is done through the Union Public Service Commission via the Civil Services Examination (CSE).

This national-level exam opens the gateway to administrative leadership roles in the Government of India. Selected candidates undergo rigorous training and serve in key positions across districts, states, and central ministries.

The IAS exam is conducted in three stages:

Preliminary Examination (Prelims)
Main Examination (Mains)
Personality Test (Interview)

What is the UPSC Civil Services Exam?

The UPSC CSE is a highly competitive exam with lakhs of aspirants appearing every year. It tests a candidate’s knowledge, analytical ability, decision-making skills, and overall personality.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for IAS through UPSC, candidates must fulfil the following:

Educational Qualification

A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university (final-year students can also apply)

Age Limit

General Category: 21 to 32 years
OBC: Up to 35 years
SC/ST: Up to 37 years

Attempts

General: 6 attempts
OBC: 9 attempts
SC/ST: Unlimited (within age limit)

Application Process

Candidates need to apply online through the official UPSC portal.

Application fee:
- ₹100 for General/OBC candidates
- No fee for SC/ST/PwD/Female candidates
Payment mode: Online

It is important to carefully fill out the form and select the correct exam center and preferences.

Exam Pattern

1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)

Paper 1 (General Studies): 100 questions, 200 marks
Paper 2 (CSAT): 80 questions, 200 marks (qualifying)
Duration: 2 hours each
Negative marking: 1/3rd marks deducted for wrong answers
