Overview

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) is a national level examination designed to standardize and streamline admissions to undergraduate programs across universities in India. It provides a common platform and equal opportunity for students from all educational boards — including CBSE, ICSE, and NIOS — from both rural and urban backgrounds.

CUET UG 2026: Key Changes Announced by UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced major changes to CUET-UG 2026 to improve efficiency and fairness in the admission process.

  • Computer-Based Testing (CBT): The exam will be conducted exclusively in CBT mode for a standardized testing environment.
  • Fewer Subjects: The number of subjects has been reduced from 63 to 23, allowing students to focus on their areas of interest.
  • Uniform Duration: All papers will have a standardized duration of 60 minutes.
  • Flexible Subject Selection: Students can choose subjects they may not have studied in Class 12, promoting interdisciplinary learning.
  • General Aptitude Test (GAT): For discontinued subjects, admissions will be based on GAT scores.

Major Recommendations by UGC

  1. Once a Year: CUET-UG will be held once annually in CBT mode.
  2. Subject Choices: Students can appear for up to 5 subjects, regardless of their Class 12 subjects.
  3. Exam Duration: Each subject paper will be 60 minutes.
  4. Compulsory Questions: All questions are compulsory with negative marking.
  5. NCERT Syllabus: Questions will be based on the Class 12 NCERT syllabus.
  6. Languages: The exam will be offered in 13 languages (same as CUET-UG 2024).
  7. Language Proficiency: Language-specific papers will test proficiency in 13 languages; others assessed via GAT.
  8. Discontinued Subjects: Entrepreneurship, Teaching Aptitude, Fashion Studies, Tourism, Legal Studies, and Engineering Graphics are discontinued. Admissions for these will be based on GAT.
