CUET UG 2025: Major Changes Announced by UGC
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced significant changes to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for Undergraduates (UG) 2025. These changes aim to streamline the admission process and improve the overall efficiency of the exam.
Key Updates:
- Shift to Computer-Based Testing (CBT): The exam will now be conducted exclusively in CBT mode, ensuring a standardized testing environment.
- Reduction in Number of Subjects: The number of subjects has been reduced from 63 to 23, allowing students to focus on their areas of interest.
- Uniform Exam Duration: All exams will have a standardized duration of 60 minutes, providing equal testing time for all candidates.
- Flexibility in Subject Selection: Students can now choose subjects that they may not have studied in Class 12, promoting interdisciplinary learning.
- General Aptitude Test (GAT): For subjects that have been discontinued, admissions will be based on the scores of the redesigned General Aptitude Test.
Detailed Proposal from UGC: The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) was introduced to standardize the admission process for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs across universities. It aims to create a level playing field for students from diverse educational boards and socio-economic backgrounds.
Major Recommendations:
- Conduct Once a Year: CUET-UG will be conducted once a year in CBT mode.
- Subject Choices: Students can appear for up to five subjects, irrespective of their Class XII subjects.
- Exam Duration: Each subject paper will have a consistent duration of one hour.
- Compulsory Questions: All questions will be compulsory with negative marking.
- NCERT Syllabus: Questions will be based on the NCERT syllabus.
- Examination Medium: The exam will be offered in 13 languages, similar to CUET-UG 2024.
- Language Proficiency: Language-specific papers will test proficiency in 13 languages, with other languages being assessed through the General Aptitude Test.
- Discontinued Subjects: Entrepreneurship, Teaching Aptitude, Fashion Studies, Tourism, Legal Studies, and Engineering Graphics subjects will be discontinued, with admissions based on the General Aptitude Test.
The UGC has invited feedback from all stakeholders on the proposed methodology. Feedback can be submitted through the provided Google Form within 15 days from the publication date of the public notice.
Why These Changes? Based on feedback from previous years, these revisions aim to provide a better, more efficient, and conducive environment for students taking CUET. The goal is to ensure equal opportunity and a transparent, technology-driven admission process.
CUET has already seen widespread adoption, with 283 universities and over 13 lakh candidates participating last year. These changes are expected to further enhance the credibility and effectiveness of the exam.
